Ringo Starr: 'Beatles were lucky to have me as a drummer'
Ringo Starr has claimed that The Beatles were lucky to have him as their drum player.
Before he joined The Beatles, the bespectacled star, 70, was already in a band called Rory and The Hurricanes, who were, up to that point, the "big shots in the city", reported Live magazine.
The drummer was already somewhat of a local star, while The Beatles, who were looking for a replacement for their original drummer Pete Best, were not.
Starr told the magazine: "Yeah. They were lucky to get me. It wasn’t just that I was a big shot; I was a cool drummer. Brian Epstein asked if I would play at lunchtime at the Cavern with them. That’s how I got started."
In a candid interview he talked about his enduring friendship with Paul McCartney, his 30-year marriage to former bond girl Barbara Bach, his dry-sense of humour – he managed to offend his fans in his home city of Liverpool by saying he didn't miss the city – and his up and coming tour in June.
Ringo famously came up with the name for The Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night. It was originally called Beatlemania. The reason for the name was self-explanatory – it had been a hard night of recording music.
