Richard X: This is how they leak music online
Posted on 1 Feb 2012 18:18 to category : Music News

Richard X, who has worked with MIA, Kelis and the 'original' Sugababes, told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat that fraudsters posing as music industry employees ring him up asking if he'll forward on demos and samples of stuff he's working on.
According to Richard X, otherwise known as Richard Philips, these imposters scour the internet, search databases, read forums and seek out publisher catalogues to find out who's working on what.
"That's enough for them to write a cheeky email disguised as someone from the management, touring agency or someone related to the artists in an attempt to get you, the producer, to send them finished tracks or demos," he told Newsbeat.
In a 24/7 age, where record companies are under pressure to continuously deliver music akin to a factory production line, the chances of otherwise savvy professionals sending a demo to a criminal is very high.
"I know of a producer recently who did send out the demos and the masters to a random person," Richard X said.
A Spanish man was arrested last year in December for leaking Madonna's lead single Gimme All Your Luvin from her new album MDNA.
