The Norwegian conductor Arild Remmereit has revealed an unlikely source of inspiration for his love of music – the electric guitar.

Remmereit, who has just become the new music director for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), told democratandchronicle.com that although he had started playing on the piano at the age of six, it wasn't until he got his hands on an electric guitar that he fell in love with music.

"What really made my passion for music take off was an electric guitar that I was allowed to buy when I was 12.

And I had platform shoes — remember those? I formed a new band every week with my school friends."

The maestro also revealed that he learnt how to play the trumpet as a youngster.

It was in 2005 that Remmereit first caught the attention of the classical music world when he came in at short notice to guest conduct the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

He told the Penfield Post: "It ended up with me being on the front page of section B of the New York Times — which is what the American music industry reads. It was half a front page Bruce Springsteen and a half a front page me!"
