Rare Stradivarius violin to be sold
A rare Stradivarius violin is to be sold off at an auction on June 20th 2011, with all its proceeds going to the Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund.
The Lady Blunt Violin of 1721, which sold for $10 million (£6.1 million) the last time it went up for auction in 2008, will be put up for sale online on behalf of its owners the Nippon Music Foundation.
Ms Kazuko Shiomi, president of the foundation, said: “Each of the instruments in our collection is very dear to us. However, the extent of the devastation facing Japan is very serious and we feel that everyone and every organisation should make some sacrifice for those affected by this tragedy.”
Auction house Tarisio, which will manage the sale, said the foundation’s decision to sell its "crown jewel" was a "gesture of profound generosity".
The violin, which is named after its first known owner, Lady Ann Blunt, who was also the granddaughter of the great poet Lord Byron, is said to be one of the two best-preserved Stradivarius violins left in the world.
Jason Price, director of Tarisio, called it one of the great masterpieces, the “equivalent of da Vinci’s Mona Lisa or Michelangelo’s David”.
