Rare Beatles photographs sell for £22,000

Photographs of The Beatles from a 1964 US gig have sold for £220,000 at an auction.
Great deals on musical instruments

A rare and never before seen collection of photographs of The Beatles has fetched £220,000 at an auction at Christie's in New York.

They images were shot by Mike Mitchell in 1964 when he was a teenager.

He had attended a concert the band was playing at the Washington Coliseum, at a time when access to the legendary musicians was much easier than it would ever be.

Characteristically evocative of the way the Fab Four are remembered, the images were shot in black and white, giving them a timeless feel.

One particular image, a backlit photo of the band, sold for an astonishing £36,000.

A total of 50 images were sold at prices over the initial estimates, which had been made because the photographer is not that well known.

However, given the enduring popularity of the band, which shows no sign of ever faltering, and the subtle brilliance of their understated composition, astute bidders clocked onto their future investment potential.

Christie's told reporters: "The concert given at the Washington Coliseum was part of a defining moment in the Beatles' career, and it remains both an important event and a notable place in their story. And Mike Mitchell was there to capture it."
