Radio 3 launches 'musicality' test
People interested in learning an instrument may wish to take a new online test to find out how musical they are.
The examination has been designed by a team from Goldsmiths University in London and tests how good individuals are at grouping together different musical styles, recognising beats and memorising tunes.
Once the test has been completed, participants will be given scores on five different areas of musicality.
Scientists want to use the study to discover more about how music can shape the brain and the way in which it works.
It will also help people to learn whether they have a good musical ear, regardless of whether they have ever played an instrument before.
John Moore, a drummer and guitarist who has played with both Jesus and Mary Chain and Black Box Recorder, took the test and scored highly for perception and creativity.
He told the Guardian that he had found the tests fairly easy to complete thanks to his background as a professional musician.
"This comes from years of recording studios and click tracks, trying to keep the song in time. However, even the best drummers move on and off the beat slightly," Moore stated.
