REM's Everybody Hurts 'most likely to make men cry'

Eric Clapton's Tears in Heaven has finished second to Everybody Hurts by REM as the biggest tearjerker for men.

Everybody Hurts by REM has been named as the song most likely to make men cry.

A survey conducted by PRS for Music found the track was the biggest tearjerker for men, coming out ahead of Tears in Heaven by electric guitar icon Eric Clapton.

Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah was in third, while there were also places in the top ten for Bruce Springsteen's Streets of Philadelphia, With or Without You by U2 and Todd Duncan's Unchained Melody.

Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS for Music, said: "It is clear that a well-written tear-jerker is one that people can relate to and empathise with. It is this lyrical connection that can … move even the strongest of men."

REM will be hoping that one of the songs from their new album, which is pencilled in for release in spring 2011, can have the same long-lasting emotional impact with fans as Everybody Hurts.
