REM announce split
The group, who have been together for 31 years, notching up 15 studio albums and breaking a world record by signing a £50 million deal with Warner Bros in 1996, have split amicably.
In a statement on their website the band said: "We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished.
"To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."
Frontman Michael Stipe wrote: "A wise man once said - 'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave'."
The band first formed in 1980, with Stipe on vocalsm Pete Buck on guitar, Mike Mills on bass and Bill Berry on drums.
Berry left the group in 1997, two years after he collapsed onstage after suffering a brain aneurysm.
The group's greatest hits include Everybody Hurts, Shiny Happy People, Drive and Man on the Moon.
A compilation album, Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982–2011, will be released in November this year and will include hits spanning their whole career as well as the band's final studio recordings.
