Power supply important in guitar amps, says Gibson
Posted on 8 Dec 2009 12:16 to category : Instruments News

Electric guitar players have been encouraged to consider the rectifier and power supply when buying a guitar amp.
According to Gibson, these tend to be among the least understood and considered elements within the body of a guitar amplifier.
However, the electric guitar manufacturer insisted that they play a very important role in creating the tone of an instrument.
Indeed, it noted that certain types of rectifiers can "take a little longer to ramp up" than others.
This, it said, could influence whether a guitar amp is suitable for use in certain genres, such as blues, classic rock or metal.
Gibson added that the power supply provides the "fuel that keeps the engine burning", which means the feel and sound of the amp can be affected by the speed at which it can "cough it up".
The company has therefore advised that next time a guitarist is purchasing a new guitar amplifier, they should consider their needs and "remember to bring the power supply and rectifier into the equation".
This comes shortly after Gibson hailed electric guitars for serving as a muse to many prominent acts over the years, such as Neil Young, Van Halen and Chuck Berry.
