Pop beats rock in album sales
The Official Charts Company released figures which revealed that pop albums outsold rock albums for the first time in seven years in 2011.
Seven out of the top ten selling albums of last year were classified as being pop-orientated.
This included Adele's smash hit record 21, Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Lady Gaga's Born This Way and Jessie J's Who Are You.
"2011 was a vintage year for pop albums so it is hardly surprising that the genre has elbowed rock aside as the nation's favourite," said Geoff Taylor, chief executive of the British Recorded Music Industry.
"Although rock's share is the lowest for eight years, it still accounts for three in ten of every albums sold so recent reports of its demise are premature."
The albums said to be of a rock sensibility included Noel Gallagher's debut effort High Flying Birds and Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto.
