Playing drums helps reduce stress in young people
Eleanor Richards, a music therapist, told the Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) that by playing an African drum or a western percussion instrument, young people under stress or suffering from depression could release "anger and negative energy".
Ms Richards, who teaches at Anglia Ruskin University in Britain, had been in Delhi, India, to speak about the "healing powers" of music at the International Indian Arts Festival.
Describing her approach to treating people as interactive, she explained that it would initially involve playing a musical instrument together with a patient to help establish a "relationship".
She said: "The patient expresses his feelings through music and I try to respond to them. I try to find out through music how much damage a psychological ailment like depression has caused to a patient’s capacity to feel alive."
This is the latest in a growing trend that is highlighting the powerful effect of music on development, wellbeing and health. One report from Illinois, US remarked on music's ability to help improve hearing and another study from Australia showed how music helped students perform better academically.
