Playing a musical instrument 'good for mental health'
Posted on 2 Aug 2010 13:59 to category : Instruments News

Learning to play a musical instrument has been recommended as a good way of ensuring mental wellbeing.
Taking up an instrument is one of the suggestions made by the Eastern and Coastal Primary Care Trust as part of its new three-year strategy for dealing with mental health issues.
More than 90 people took part in consultations on the scheme, which also recommends going for walks and bike rides, eating healthily and taking up a hobby such as dancing, reports This is Kent.
Dr Jonathan Sexton, assistant director for public health at the trust, said: "This strategy is about all of us working together as a community to improve mental wellbeing."
According to a recent report in the Daily Mail, learning to play a musical instrument can also improve a person's IQ.
Scientists in Switzerland found that IQ levels can go up by as much as seven points when they play on a regular basis.
