Playing a music instrument improves hearing

A report has revealed that a playing a musical instrument from a young age can help improve hearing in later life.

Playing a music instrument helps combat both hearing loss and memory loss in old age, according to a new study.

The report suggests that years of playing a musical instrument can "fine tune" the nervous system in the musician.

The outcome of this is a greater improvement in the ability to tell apart different sounds as well as an enhancement of auditory memory.

Nina Kraus, director of the Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory at Northwestern University in Illinois, said: "Lifelong musical training appears to confer advantages in at least two important functions known to decline with age - memory and the ability to hear speech in noise."

Over the course of the study, the scientists carried out tests of memory and speech recognition on participants – both musicians and non-musicians – aged between 45 and 65.

The results showed that the musicians, most of whom had been learning to play instruments from around the age of nine, "outperformed" the non-musicians in sound processing and auditory memory tasks.

According to the Royal National Institute for Death People (RNID), 71.7 per cent of over 70s in the UK have some kind of hearing loss.
