Plan B's rap rejected by label
Plan B will release his new album himself after his record label rejected his return to rap.
The musician - who will perform at the action sports and music festival Relentless NASS this weekend - was upset when his record company announced they would not back his return to hip-hop.
Plan B told British station BBC Radio 1: "The label said, 'Look, we love your soul record. We know what to do with that. With the hip-hop it's not going to get play on radio, we don't know how to market it and we're not feeling it.' "
But rather than be disappointed, Plan B - real name Ben Drew - decided to personally take control of the record.
He explained: "I was offended but I said, 'Alright, cool'. This is the compromise - I take that hip-hop record, I put it out on my own label and you own none of it. I'll promote it off the back of my soul record and that's what I'm doing."
Plan B has so far sold over 500,000 copies of his soul album 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' this year, but accepts 'The Ballad of Belmarsh' - a hip-hop "version of events" mirroring the story of his last LP - won't do as well.
He said: "I know 'The Ballad of Belmarsh' is not going to work commercially, I know radio ain't going to play it but I'm still going to put it out there because I love it. It's a piece of art. It's probably going to sell about 100,000 copies - no more. But I'm cool with that."Posted on 9 Jul 2010 10:00 to category : Music News
