Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra looks for soloist via YouTube
Posted on 13 Feb 2012 14:30 to category : Instruments News

All instrumental soloists – including piano, violin, cello, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, harp and horn – can take part in the unique competition.
"This is applying 21st-century technology to something we've been doing since orchestras began, and that's scouting young talent," Robert Moir, senior vice-president of artistic planning and audience engagement for the PSO, told the Associated Press.
In a style similar to the X Factor, performers will be judged by the public, although Manfred Honeck, the conductor and musical director of the PSO, has power of veto.
The winner will also receive a cheque of $10,000 (approximately £6,321) and a paid trip to perform along with the orchestra, in what is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
"The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has a reputation of being one of the best American orchestras and we would never allow ourselves to have a soloist who is not good enough to be accompanied by us," Mr Honeck told the news provider.
According to its official website, the PSO's mission statement is to provide "musical experiences at the highest level of expression to enrich the community and to satisfy the needs and preferences of our audiences".
