Piano playing is self discovery, says Vijay Iyer

Famed piano player has likened tinkling the ivories to a sort of self discovery...
"Playing the piano is about finding out who you are," says Iyer.
The famed piano player Vijay Iyer has likened tinkling the ivories to a sort of self discovery.

Talking to the Telegraph newspaper the jazz player, who features on such LPs as Historically and Door, said: "For me playing the piano is about finding out who you are."

He went on to say that this is the thing that differentiates his own genre of jazz from more classical sounds as far as he is concerned, when it comes to how "interesting" the genres are. Jazz, naturally, wins out in this comparison!

Picking out some compositions by Bach by way of example, he said that they sprung out of a "culture" mostly disconnected from his "situation", although he did say he liked the compositions (the famed violin Sonatas and Partitas) a lot.

He also said that classical styles were played in his house during childhood, whilst jazz was absent in this sense.

Returning to the piano itself, he also compared the music instrument poetically to "a lens or microscope which you bring to bear on different kinds of thing, which transforms them".

Published by KT.
