Piano player Roger Williams has died.

Piano legend Roger Williams, who was known for being the first and only star to have a US number one with a piano instrumental, has died in Los Angeles. He was 87.

That track, entitled Autumn Leaves, reached the number one Billboard spot in 1955 and stayed there for four weeks.

Williams, who had been battling pancreatic cancer, was known for his virtuosity on the musical instrument. He also excelled in classical pieces to jazz pieces.

Orrin Hatch, US Senator for Utah, said: "Roger was one of the greatest pianists in the world, and could play anything from classical music to jazz. He was one of the greatest personalities I've ever known.

"He could touch any audience, from teenagers to senior citizens."

A good friend of former President Jimmy Carter, he was known as the "pianist to Presidents".

As with all piano legends, Williams showed a canny knack for playing the piano from the age of three.

If that wasn't amazing enough, by the age of nine he had mastered a number of other musical instruments.

Old age didn't diminish his talents, energy or enthusiasm for playing live, and on his 75th birthday he famously played a 12-hour marathon at Steinway Hall in New York.
