Pete Townshend calls Apple a digital vampire
The legendary guitarist said: "Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the wild west internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can't provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire, like a digital Northern Rock, for its enormous commission."
The star was speaking at the first John Peel Lecture in Salford, where he added that the internet was wrecking havoc on the institution of copyright.
He then went on to voice his anger at people who have illegally downloaded The Who’s music for free, adding that they might as well steal his son’s bike "while they’re at it".
Townshend said it is a difficult age for musicians, one which is defined by a dilemma.
"A creative person would prefer their music to be stolen and enjoyed than ignored. This is the dilemma for every creative soul: he or she would prefer to starve and be heard than eat well and be ignored."
