Pendulum thought they were going to get "slaughtered" at Download festival.

The rock/drum and bass crossover band - who supported rockers Iron Maiden at the British music festival - admitted while hearing the crowd chant was an intimidating experience, the band thrived in front of a "challenging" crowd.

Frontman Rob Swires said: "Two minutes before we went on the crowd were chanting, 'Maiden, Maiden'. I thought we were going to get slaughtered, but we actually went down really well. We thrive on that sort of tension. We are in our element when we play in front of a crowd that's challenging.

"I think we're very lucky it's 2010. If it was any other time, audiences wouldn't respond as well as they do now."

The 'Propane Nightmares' hitmakers admitted the band's name is "pretty apt", as they tend to get bored with certain musical styles, and awing between different genres quickly.

Rob added: "We're aiming for that raw visceral sound. If we can do that and stand out in contrast to the other bands at any festival then we are happy. Our name wasn't a conscious thing, but it's pretty apt. We get bored quickly with what we last did and tend to want to do something completely different."
