Paul McCartney to release new album in 2012
The Beatles megastar has been busy recording a selection of classic American songs as well as producing some original hits of his own.
Eric Clapton, Diana Krall and Stevie Wonder are three of the stars who have lent McCartney their time, energy and musical prowess.
"When I kind of got into songwriting, I realised how well structured these songs were and I think I took a lot of my lessons from them," said the Fab Four legend.
"I always thought artists like Fred Astaire were very cool. Writers like Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, all of those guys - I just thought the songs were magical. And then, as I got to be a songwriter I thought it's beautiful, the way they made those songs."
He added that making the music was an exceptional experience, describing it as "spontaneous, kind of organic".
The 69-year-old said it reminded him of what it was like recording music back in the day with The Beatles.
"It was important for me to keep away from the more obvious song choices, so many of the classic standards will be unfamiliar to some people. I hope they are in for a pleasant surprise."
