Paul McCartney to pick up Kennedy Center award at the White House
Posted on 9th Sep 2010 18:59 to category Band / Celebrity News
Electric guitar player Paul McCartney is to receive a special accolade at the White House later this year.
McCartney is to be presented with a Kennedy Center medallion at a state dinner hosted by Hillary Clinton on December 4th, alongside fellow winners chat show host Oprah Winfrey, country music star Merle Haggard and composer Jerry Herman.
The awards are given each year to people who are judged to have made a significant contribution to American culture.
McCartney said he was delighted to be picking a prize named after President Kennedy.
"His presidency was so inspiring for so many people that it is a great pleasure for this kid from Liverpool to receive this honour," said the electric guitar player.
Earlier this year, the former Beatles star played a number of gigs around the UK as part of his Up and Coming tour, performing in London, Cardiff and Glasgow, as well as headlining the Isle of Wight Festival.
