Paralysed musician to play violin again
Eric Wan, 33, will come on stage and play the violin through the use of the Virtual Music Instrument (VMI), reported the Gazette.
It will be a dream come true a Mr Wan, who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis – a neurological disorder that damages the spinal cord – when he was 18. He thought he would never be able to play again.
"Being able to master my violin playing skills gave me much pleasure. My disability has prevented me from playing any musical instruments. Holland Bloorview's VMI technology has given me the ability to control a musical instrument once again," he told the news provider.
"This performance is a good opportunity for me to demonstrate such technology to others with severe disabilities. More importantly, this performance will encourage the continuing development of the VMI."
Mr Wan has been instrumental in developing the software, working with Dr Tom Chau on technology that looks to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
Fort Worth Symphony recently came into possession of a Stradivarius. It is the orchestra's second such instrument.
