Nils Lofgren: Talent not necessary for learning guitar

Nils Lofgren has urged those who do not feel talented enough to play guitar not to quit learning the instrument.

Electric guitar player Nils Lofgren has said people should not be put off learning the instrument because it is hard work.

The musician, who has been part of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band for 25 years, stated that many people do not pick up a guitar because they feel they have no talent or rhythm.

However, he told the Fender website that these are not essential attributes for would-be guitarists, as there are plenty of guitar tricks that can easily be mastered.

"I show people things to do with one finger every lesson that require no practice and no talent," Lofgren commented.

He stated that it is important to teach learner guitarists the "fun stuff" more than technically demanding playing techniques.

This, he said, is important to stop people getting frustrated and abandoning their interest in learning an instrument.

Lofgren added that the one-finger exercises allow people to leave his guitar tutorials feeling happy and accomplished.
