New music instrument designed for people who can't play traditional instruments
Posted on 18 Jul 2011 11:29 to category : Instruments News

A new music instrument that was designed "explicitly" for special needs music, music therapy and inclusive education, is now available to buy.
Sounding like something out of a Roald Dahl story, the Skoog is a new music instrument that "empowers" people who are unable to play traditional instruments through its unique interface.
A soft and squeezable instrument, the Skoog, which can be plugged into a laptop or computer via a USB lead, can be played in a number of ways.
Users can touch, press, squash, twist and tap the music instrument to generate a range of sounds.
What makes it so unique is its ability to mimic, for example, orchestral instruments.
By squeezing the Skoog, which is cube-shaped with coloured buttons coming out of the surface, the user can "blow" a flute or tap it as you would a xylophone.
It's an intuitive piece of kit that responds to movement, meaning that a variety of touches will directly affect the sound that is generated.
The instrument was developed by the Tapestry Foundation in partnership with the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts and the University of Edinburgh.
