A new fund has been set up to get music loving children and young people playing their music instruments again in schools that were damaged by the earthquake in Japan.

The joint effort between the Zenkoku Gakki Kyokai (All Japanese Musical Instrument Association) and the composer Ryuichi Sakamoto is known as the School Music Revival Fund, reported the Mainichi Daily News.

It will offer students free inspection and repair of damaged music instruments at schools hit hard by the country's strongest ever recorded earthquake, which not only triggered a tsunami but led to a massive nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima plant.

Speaking to the newspaper, Mr Sakamoto said: "I hope we can help the disaster victims from a musical perspective for a long time to come.

"I make music, so I hope to do my part to help by composing new pieces."

The fund will specifically focus on some of the worst hit regions in Japan, which includes Iwate, Fukushima and Miyagi, although there will be scope to extend its remit further.

Money is being raised in a number of ways, from donations, fundraising activities and concerts like the one being organised by Mr Sakamoto in December.
