Violin players, clog dancers and singers were in full musical swing yesterday at the launch of Sunderland's first ever folk festival.

The festival, which runs from August 27th to 29th, will be the biggest folk event of its kind in the north-east, reported the Sunderland Echo.

Organised by Sunderland City Council, Phoenix Folk and the Davy Lamp Folk Group, the organisers behind this celebration of folk music are hoping to attract both folk enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

John Kelly, councillor and portfolio holder for safer city and culture, said that the council had identified a "gap in August" and wanted to introduce something new to the calendar.

Speaking to the newspaper, he said: "The festival will be the biggest folk festival in the north-east. We’re hoping to reach people around the city but also for areas like Cumbria, to bring people into Sunderland for the festival."

As well as music to enjoy, visitors to the festival will have plenty of opportunities to take part in workshops that will introduce them to a range of music instruments associated with the folk scene.

The Music Instrument Retail Conference (MIRC) revealed that sales of ukuleles have dramatically increased over the last year.
