New device captures essence of violin bow
Developers Dylan Menzies at De Montfort University in Leicester have come up with a device that allows players to capture the subtle sounds and tones that are evident when playing a violin with a bow, New Scientist reports.
The O-Bow uses optical sensors to note the movement of a real violin across a groove in a metal instrument. This allows the device to highlight the angle and speed which is then transferred into a connected computer.
Players can then alter the note of the violin by using a separate keyboard and it provides a much more authentic sound when creating it digitally.
It is a unique type of recording equipment away from the likes of Cubase and Sibelius which is based more around sounds created on the piano or for studio production.
The O-Bow has already been demonstrated at the Tangible, Embedded and Embodied Interaction conference in Barcelona, Spain, last month with plans laid out for a successful promotional campaign.
