Musicians tested on violins
Dr Claudia Fritz, a researcher from the University of Paris, conducted an experiment at an international violin competition in Indianapolis last year.
She asked 21 virtuoso musicians to play a number of violins – three modern and three antique – blindfolded.
Dr Fritz then asked them to rank the musical instruments in order of their perceived quality, based on the sharpness of the sound, playability, projection and their responsiveness.
What she discovered was that the musicians tended to prefer the newer violins than the Stradivarius ones.
"The old versus new issue doesn't make any sense," she said.
"They are beautiful instruments, but the prices are insane. It doesn't matter if the violin's old or new, all that matters is whether it's a good violin or a bad violin."
Her report on these fascinating findings has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal.
It is estimated that 650 original Stradivarius violins exist around the world.
