Musicians 'need to be using instruments more imaginatively'
Bands need to be more creative in how they are using their instruments if they want to achieve success, it has been claimed.
Speaking to the BBC about the current lack of guitar-based groups in the charts, singer-songwriter Fran Barker said that audiences are demanding a lot more from musicians than they did in the past.
For bands to be on the cutting edge of the music scene, they have to be trying hard to come up with new sounds, she suggested.
"You can't have a simple sound any more - it's got to be much more complex and instruments need to be used a lot more imaginatively," Barker stated.
Her band Seerauber Jenny are attempting to go down this route, with their guitar-driven music being backed by a hospital heart monitor being used to create beats.
The group, which includes Mint Royale's Neil Claxton, released their debut single Push It Away in September.
