Musician lifts lid on Chet Atkins' guitar technique
Posted on 26th Aug 2009 16:00 to category Band / Celebrity News
Electric guitar players who want to emulate Chet Atkins have been advised to use a somewhat unorthodox string set-up.
Speaking to the Gibson website, he revealed that this allowed him to play bass lines with his thumb and keep the main melody of the song going at the same time.
Wariner added that much of Atkins' electric guitar sound came from his hands rather than an intricate set-up.
"He had amazing articulation on the guitar," he commented.
"His notes were always pure and clean and gorgeous."
Wariner added that while Atkins was capable of playing a lot of "flashy licks", he was more interested in creating enjoyable music which placed the melody at the forefront.
The country music star, who died in 2001, worked with many famous guitar players during his lengthy career, including Mark Knopfler, Hank Snow and the late Les Paul.
