Musical MP wants to learn bagpipes

Scottish culture minister Michael Russell has revealed his passion for music and his plans to learn the bagpipes in the future.

The choice would appear to be in stark contrast to the politician's usual music tastes, with Benjamin Britten and Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry among his favourite composers.

"I suppose my musical background was at a very early stage in the great tradition of Anglican church music, which is reflected in my taste for English romantic composers," he remarked.

His comments came as Jim Bryan, one of the UK's most famous bagpipe players, died aged 77.

Mr Bryan was a former president of the Northumbrian Pipers Society in 2006 and the Salisbury Journal claims his 1960s manual on smallpipes was a major factor behind the instrument's popularity today.
