An innovative after-school project is underway in Los Angeles, USA, which introduces young people to music making through hip-hop, DJ equipment and software.

Known as Sessions LA, which is led by Patrick Huang, a DJ, the project aims to keep youngsters active and out of trouble through music writing, production, recording and DJing.

It states that its mission is to "promote youth development and nurture critical thinking through the process of creating music".

"Literally what I tell kids is that if you have a lunch table and some folks ciphering, that's hip-hop," Mr Huang told CNN.

"It might not be music in the eyes of a closed-minded musician but it is energy, it is rhythm and it is community. All we do is help the youth bring out the creativity that's already in them."

The 30-year-old DJ explains that a lot of the young people who take part in the project are Latin, black and Asian, many of whom have experienced trauma or abuse.
