Mountain guitarist reminisces on Who sessions
Posted on 9th Jun 2009 18:00 to category Band / Celebrity News
Electric guitarist Leslie West - the man behind Mountain's Mississippi Queen - has spoken of his often overlooked contribution to a classic Who album.
West worked on several sessions for the Who's Next record, which contains the enduring classic Won't Get Fooled Again, as well as Behind Blue Eyes, Baba O'Riley and live favourite My Wife.
Although the Kit Lambert-produced recordings were eventually rejected in favour of a new version by Glyn Johns, the original takes featuring West were issued some years later in 2003.
Speaking to the Gibson website, he revealed that his participation came about because he had been personally requested to play by Pete Townshend.
"Pete didn't want to play lead guitar," West commented.
"I gave him a Les Paul Junior at those sessions," he recalled.
West added that one of his enduring memories of playing with The Who is the volume at which the band played.
