Ever the polemic, Morrissey has once again caused sparked widespread indignation around the world after claiming that fast food chains are guilty of murder in the same vein as the mass murders committed in Norway by Anders Breivik.

The Smiths icon, a staunch vegetarian, made the outrageous statement at a concert in Poland, which is part of his European tour.

Before launching into one of his songs, Meat Is Murder, the irascible star launched into his controversial remarks.

He told the audience: "We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead [Now revealed to be 68].

"Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried S*** every day."

Fans have taken to the web to express their rage.

Ben Dimiero wrote on Twitter: "Move over Glenn Beck. Morrissey is trying to win the award for "Most Offensively Idiotic Thing Said About Norway".

On Facebook, Mark Lang said: "The sad thing is some of these poor kids were probably fans of his."

Breivik could be charged with crimes against humanity, which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years.
