Midge Ure plans benefit gig for Japan bass guitar player
Mick Karn, the ex-bass guitar player with Japan, is to be the beneficiary of a charity concert.
Karn has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and his family are facing financial hardship as a result, reports BBC 6 Music.
Ultravox man Midge Ure is behind the charity concert, which is set to attract some of the biggest names in music.
Along with Bob Geldof, he is well-known for being the orchestrator of the Live Aid concert in 1985.
Ure told the station he has had contact "from people I haven't spoke to in a long time", although he ruled out holding the event at London's O2 Arena as it would be "too ambitious".
Speaking of his admiration for Karn's skill with the bass guitar, Ure remarked: "Until I heard Japan, I had never heard a bass guitar played like that, it was almost like playing a lead instrument, incredibly percussive and melodic."
Karn's bass guitar has appeared on recordings with the likes of Kate Bush and Gary Numan.
He has also released numerous solo albums and projects with members of groups such as Bauhaus.Posted on 14 Jun 2010 18:15 to category : Band / Celebrity News
