M.I.A's stage invasion
Posted on 9 Aug 2010 10:00 to category : Music News

M.I.A. was forced to end her headline slot early at this weekend's Big Chill festival after hundreds of fans invaded the stage.
The 'XOXO' hitmaker - who was Saturday night's (07.08.10) headline act at the music event in Herefordshire, west England - invited the crowd to join her on stage while she performed hit tune 'Paper Planes'.
However, the rapper had to abandon the song when more than 200 fans took her up on her offer.
A festivalgoer told BANG Showbiz: "It was actually pretty scary. People didn't need any encouragement and as soon as she invited the crowd on stage there was a massive surge forward. I was fairly near the front and felt myself being crushed into the person in front of me.
"Although it was all supposed to be a bit of fun it did get a bit out of hand. Even M.I.A. looked overwhelmed and dashed off stage before the end of the set."
The festival's organisers have since admitted more people joined the star on stage than was originally expected.
They tweeted: "A spokesperson for M.I.A. thanked the wonderful audience at the Big Chill for the fantastic reception received and apologised for having to cut the set short due to overwhelming demand for fans to come on stage when only a few were expected."
Other performers at the Big Chill included Massive Attack - who performed a greatest hits set on Friday night (06.08.10) - and pregnant Lily Allen.
