London teen scoops award for cello skills
Anoushka Sharp was named Emunah Young Musician of the Year 2012 at the Royal Academy of Music on Sunday March 4th, according to a Times Series report.
The 12-year-old, who hails from Golders Green, said she was "elated".
Anoushka, who attends The North London Collegiate School, recited Ernest Bloch's Prayer and Jewish Song at the event, dazzling the attendant crowd with her cello skills.
She told the newspaper she was "nervous" but "very excited" about entering the competition.
"But I felt really elated when I won," she said.
The youngster has been playing the cello since the age of four and mixed formal lessons with playing for fun.
Competition judge Malcolm Singer, director of music at the Yehudi Menuhin School, was quoted as saying: "Anoushka is extremely musical and communicated her love of music to the audience. Her cello has a very sweet tone. It was a lovely performance and particularly pleasing in one so young."
