Live music licensing laws should not be relaxed, say councils

Plans to ease restrictions on venues that want to stage live music have been opposed by local authorities.

Musicians such as electric guitar players and drummers could stand to lose out after a poll found that many authorities are opposed to relaxing music licensing laws.

According to a survey of council licensing officers by the Local Government Association, nine in ten do not believe existing restrictions should be eased.

Respondents warned that if bars, clubs and cafes are allowed to stage live music for less than 100 people, there could be a considerable increase in the number of noise-related complaints.

Councillor Chris White, spokesman for the LGA, acknowledged that being able to go out and enjoy music is part of having a good quality of life.

"But so is being able to get a good night's sleep," he continued.

"Families should be able to put their children to bed in peace."

Former Undertones frontman and chairman of UK Music Feargal Sharkey has described the attitude of the LGA as disappointing, but said it is not unexpected.

Speaking to the Publican, the Northern Irish singer noted that burglar alarms, barking dogs and loud stereos attract far more complaints about noise than live music.
