Les Paul inaugurated into Gibson Revolutionary Hall of Fame
The company has decided to honour seven artists whose contributions altered the world of music after running a recent poll to decide upon the 50 acts most worthy of the title from the past 100 years.
To come up with the seven who made it into the Hall of Fame, Gibson compared the overall top five, chosen by both readers and industry professionals, with the top five picked solely by fans.
As there was some overlap, seven names were ultimately picked out, including Les Paul.
Gibson contributor Ted Drozdowski explained Paul was responsible for the invention of multi-track recording, as well as the solid-body electric guitar.
This instrument became known as the Gibson Les Paul and was released in 1952, going on to become one of the most sought-after guitars among musicians to this day.
"Every time somebody plays a multi-tracked recording [or] picks up a solid body guitar … that's a tribute to Les, knowing or not," said Mr Drozdowski.
Paul was named fifth in the Gibson rundown last week, with Bob Dylan taking the honour of the most revolutionary artist.
