Led Zeppelin initially dismissed as 'unconvincing' by BBC
Electric guitar legends Led Zeppelin were criticised following an early BBC audition as being "unconvincing" and "old-fashioned", according to newly revealed papers.
BBC Archive documents have shown that the Stairway to Heaven rockers were given a poor review by a panel of BBC music experts when they applied to appear on Radio 1 for the first time in 1969.
Despite attempts to showcase their talent on now-famous hits such as Dazed and Confused, one BBC panellist dismissed the act as a rip-off of Muddy Waters.
Jimmy Page's electric guitar playing won some praise from the acid-tongued experts, but the overall verdict was critical.
One producer described the band's music as "basically an old-fashioned sound that turns me on - but not for daytime radio".
Despite these criticisms, the four-piece band was nevertheless given a chance to record, which helped to set their groundbreaking careers into motion.Posted on 18 Dec 2009 11:45 to category : Band / Celebrity News
