Led Zeppelin Rock and Roll guitar riff 'invented in jamming session'
The famous electric guitar riff heard in Led Zeppelin track Rock and Roll was created during a jam session by the band.
It has been named in 35th place in Gibson's rundown of the best 50 riffs of all time and Ellen Barnes, a contributor to the manufacturer's Lifestyle blog, explained the group had originally gone into the studio with the intention of finishing off new song Four Sticks.
However, when Jimmy Page came up with the "magical intro" the rest of the group stopped what they were doing and got to work on writing the track that became Rock and Roll.
Page explained the process of inventing the song in an interview with the Times last year.
"The riff and the sequence was really immediate to those 12-bar patterns that you had in those old rock songs like Little Richard," the electric guitar player said.
"It was just so spur-of-the-moment the way that it just came together more or less out of nowhere."
Gibson will announce the winner of the best guitar riff later this week, but so far there have been places in the countdown for the likes of Van Halen, Rage Against the Machine and The Beatles.
