Learning musical instruments 'can encourage children's development'
Posted on 21 Jul 2010 16:11 to category : Instruments News

Encouraging a child to learn to play a musical instrument and read music can have a big impact on their mental development.
Recent research carried out by Northwester University of Illinois found that children who were taught how to play music did better in subjects as varied as foreign languages and maths.
In addition, it was shown to have a physical impact as the structure of their brain altered while they learned to perform music, prompting calls from the researchers for more music to be taught in schools.
Dr Nina Kraus, who conducted the research, said: "The beneficial effects confer advantages beyond music."
The study also found that learning to play an instrument benefitted children regardless of their social background.
These findings could promote more schemes to be created like the Demos Orchestra programme in Paris where underprivileged children were offered the chance to learn how to play a musical instrument.
