Learning a musical instrument 'boosts brain power'
Learning to a play music instruments from a young age can help boost people's brain function, according to a new study.
Research conducted at the University of Kansas Medical Center and detailed in the journal Neuropsychology highlighted that adults aged between 60 and 83 who had some level of musical knowledge performed better on a series of cognitive tests compared to adults of a similar age who had never played an instrument or learned how to read music.
"Musical activity throughout life may serve as a challenging cognitive exercise, making your brain fitter and more capable of accommodating the challenges of aging," said lead researcher Brenda Hanna-Pladdy.
"Since studying an instrument requires years of practice and learning, it may create alternate connections in the brain that could compensate for cognitive declines as we get older."
Previous research has shown that playing a musical instrument can improve people's verbal ability and pattern recognition, even though these skills are not normally associated with musical ability.
