Last.fm to become more social
Last.fm is shifting its focus on being just a music streaming service as it enters the online social media world.
The online music software company announced new developments like the ability to sign in from Facebook and share music with extended online networks, reported BBC Radio 1.
Still a successful company, attracting some 30 million global users each month, it has seen increasing competition from Spotify, iTunes and Amazon.
With Google and Apple entering the "cloud" world, rivalry is fiercer than ever.
Speaking to Radio 1, Matthew Hawn, vice preside of Last.fm, recognised that there were shortcomings in some of its current approaches and that they still had "a lot of work to do".
He added: "We now need to focus on making the service more mainstream and plugged into people's other music experiences and social networks."
Part of their strategy will include the promotion of its "scrobbling service", which allows users to basically be able to publish their taste in music. When a person listens to a track, the information is sent to Last.fm, which then adds it to the user's profile.
According to Forbes, Spotify is rumoured to be developing an integrated online music streaming service with Facebook that would allow users of the social networking site access to Spotify's music library directly from their pages.
