Lady Gaga has been accused of profiting from the sale of her We Pray for Japan wristbands, which went up on her website with the claim "all proceeds go directly to Japan relief efforts".

Gaga has been served with a lawsuit by a Detroit-based legal network who claim that she used a "deceptive advertising campaign" and a "pattern of racketeering" to illegally accrue funds.

The prosecutors believe that the singer and her team not only kept a proportion of the $5 (£3) wristband, but added extra postage costs to "pocket more money".

This could the biggest challenge yet to the piano playing global superstar who is looked up to by millions of people across the world.

She has been sued under her real name of Stefani Germanotta.

The fashionista was recently in Japan, headlining the MTV Video Music Aid Japan concert at the Makuhari Messe Arena.

Speaking to reporters at the time, she said: "I can't say enough to people all over the world that the majority of Japan right now, Japan in general, is very safe. It's fine to come here. It's beautiful."

Representatives of Lady Gaga have yet to reply to the lawsuit.

Japan was hit by a massive earthquake in March which triggered a devastating tsunami.
