Kanye West and Jay-Z recorded album in hotel rooms
Music and film leaks are so endemic in the entertainment industry that it has become almost impossible for artists to keep a tight lid on their creative output without it miraculously getting out into the public domain, these days typified by being on the web.
Knowing this all too well, Kanye West and Jay-Z took to extreme measures during the recording of their album Watch The Throne, by deciding to not go down the tradition route of working in the recording studio, seeking instead to record the album in a number of hotel rooms.
Anthony Kilhoeffer, one of the music engineers who worked on the duo's hip hop album, said that after tracks had been leaked from his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, West was adamant that the same thing would not happen again.
Speaking to Billboard, Mr Kilhoeffer said: "During Dark Twisted we realised that no one's email was secure, whether it was Gmail or Mac or iDisk.
"These songs are showing up on the internet. You hear people talking in the background. It was at a crazy level."
He went on to reveal that email communication was almost off entirely during the recording process with West asking producers and contributors to meet him in person to listen over samples and beats.
Jay-Z recently said that the new album is about preserving the culture of hip hop.
