Jonny Greenwood: solo composer
Jonny Greenwood's Radiohead bandmates are "a bit interested", but don't come to his classical music concerts.
The band's guitarist is also the BBC Concert Orchestra's composer in residence, and although he has unveiled three works with the orchestra, 'Popcorn Superhet Receiver', 'Smear' and 'Doghouse' his other band members - Thom Yorke, Ed O'Brien, Phil Selway and his brother Colin -have only a passing interest in his work.
Jonny said: "I think they're proud and a bit interested. No, they don't come to the concerts, but they ask for recordings. I tell them it's not the same."
The musician also said he had to prove himself in the eyes of more traditional classical musicians when first appointed by the BBC, as they didn't think he'd have the expertise.
He added to The Times newspaper: "You know, people from my background are made to feel that it's wrong to have opinions about classical music.
"So I found it healthy, particularly at school, to think about classical composers and rock bands in the same way. The reason I loved Messiaen, for instance, was that he was still alive and writing. To me that was as exciting as a great old rock band still being around."Posted on 5 Oct 2010 16:30 to category : Music News
