Johnny Marr to be crowned NME Godlike Genius
The former Smiths guitarist has been an iconic figure on the indie rock scene and has played alongside bands such as Modest Mouse and The Cribs following the split of the Manchester group in 1987.
He has performed on the Modest Mouse records We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and No One's First and You're Next, and played guitar on The Cribs' Ignore The Ignorant.
Marr will collect the award at the event at The Troxy in East London on February 25th, two days before his debut solo album, The Messenger, hits the shelves.
He will join the likes of The Cure, Noel Gallagher, Dave Grohl and Paul Weller, all of whom have received the award in the past.
Speaking to NME, Marr said: "It is a very nice thing to be getting this award and I am honoured. The NME seems to be good at giving this award to people I like so I'm in good company. I guess it means that some things are alright with the world."
