John Walker dies of cancer
John Walker, one of the founders of the Walker Brothers, and a famed guitar player, has died of liver cancer aged 67 after a six month battle with the disease.
A statement on his website said: "It is with our deepest sadness to report that Mr John Walker passed away in his Los Angeles area home on May 7, 2011. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and artiste."
Walker, whose real name was John Maus, formed the Walker Brothers in 1964 along with fellow Americans Scott Engel and Gary Leeds. Although unrelated they all adopted the surname and continued to use it in their respective solo careers.
The band enjoyed widespread success in Britain during the 1960s with hits like Lover Her, Make It Easy On Yourself, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Any More) and My Ship is Comin' In before splitting up in 1968.
On his own website, Gary Walker paid tribute to his former band mate calling him a "fantastic guitarist" and a "compassionate song-writer and gentleman", adding that the three of them "had the most incredible adventure together".
He finished by saying: "His music will live on, and therefore so will John."
