John Squire: The Stone Roses will not be reforming

Google has honoured the guitar pioneer Les Paul with a special Google Doodle.

John Squire, the former guitar player from The Stone Roses has quashed rumours that the band will be getting back together.

Squire dismissed rumours that the Manchester band would be getting back together again if the "money was right".

His comments come not long after Shaun Ryder of The Happy Mondays told the Sun newspaper that a reunion was on the cards because of the huge amounts of cash on offer.

Speaking to Shortlist, Squire said that the idea of getting back together for the money – not the music – was tragic.

He told the magazine: "I don't see these rumours as special or flattering. It's a symptom of the times. People who can afford to waste money on gigs now are of a certain age and The Stone Roses fit their brief."

His former bandmate Mani, who played bass, was equally vocal in playing down the stories circulating about a reunion. He was speaking after two of his bandmates paid their respects at his mother's funeral.

The band's former frontman and tambourine player, Ian Brown, who recently played at Gary Neville's testimonial football match, has yet to make an official comment.
